Split Pins

Split pins, also known as cotter pins, are an unthreaded fastener designed to be slotted into a hole and secured by bending each leg outwards. They are commonly made from wire of semi-circular cross section which is square cut at the end. Other specialist end finishes include Mitre or Bevel. Lengths are measured from the end of the tines to the point the base of the eyelet hole contacts with the host material. An unthreaded fastener solution for single use, as bending fatigue can cause failure if persistently re-used. Some alternative solutions for the same task are also listed here.
Fastener Material Key
A2
A2 Stainless Steel - Also known as grade 304 or 18/8. A general purpose grade of stainless steel.
A4
A4 Stainless Steel - Also known as grade 316 or 18/8/3. A higher corrosion resistant, marine grade of stainless steel.
Brass
Brass - Offers an attractive, corrosion resistant finish.
Copper
Copper Alloy - Copper has good corrosion resistance and high tensile strength, allowing it to withstand high-pressure and high temperature conditions. It is a highly ductile and malleable material, enabling copper washers to create tighter seals and withstand vibration better than steel. Copper also provides excellent thermal and electrical conductivity.
