The flange offers protection for the bolted component where the driving tool may otherwise scratch it's surface. The flange also lessens the need for a washer.
Flange Nuts, also known as Flanged Nuts, can be used on irregular and oversized holes since the protruding circular flange has a much greater surface area than a standard nut.
Flange Nuts are available with a plain flat underside or with a serrated underside that helps prevent loosening due to vibration.
