Shim rings are a type of washer used to prevent machine components from moving around axially on a shaft, and are often secured with circlips or lock washers. Being made to exact dimensions, they are used as spacers to fill gaps and create level surfaces within an assembly. Shim rings allow for a tighter alignment between machine parts, as well as being a load bearing surface. Shim rings should be placed against smooth surfaces and not used where there is a step or chamfer, which could deform the ring.
